The scleral lenses reviews for this article will be done on two different brands of lenses as well as addressing some other questions.
Two Brands for the Scleral Lenses Review Are:
- The Blanchard Onefit Med scleral lens platform.
- The BostonSight scleral lens platform.
Scleral Lens Review By Someone Who Wears Both Brands
I have been living with keratoconus for 30 years. I had a corneal transplant on my right eye due to advanced keratoconus. When I was first fitted for scleral lenses in 2017 I wore the Blanchard-designed lenses for both eyes.
I was then fitted for the BostonSight lens for my right eye. At the present time, I wear a Blanchard lens for my left eye and a Boston Sights lens for my right eye.
Blanchard Onefit Med Scleral Lenses Review
I have been wearing the One fit Med scleral lens since 2017 and I can say, I have had excellent results. They have restored my vision to 20/20 and without my lenses, I am legally blind.
Although this may be true in my case, it is important to note, that results may differ.
Two Versions of Blanchard’s One fit Med
- Onefit Med
- Onefit Med+
What’s the Difference?
Although they both have the same advanced scleral lens design there are some key differences. Firstly, the One fit Med is smaller in diameter,15.6mm as compared to the One fit Med+ which is 17.0mm.
Secondly, the larger diameter of Med+ allows for a larger landing zone for precise scleral alignment.
To put it differently, Med+ allows the practitioner to better customize the lens for hard-to-fit corneas which One fit Med does not have.
Depending on how damaged our cornea is, the Blanchard Onefit scleral lens platform gives our practitioner options for the treatment of keratoconus.
BostonSights Scleral Lenses Reviews
As mentioned earlier, I now wear the Blanchard Onefit Med for my left, and for my right, where I had undergone a full corneal transplant, I wear the BostonSight lens.
What’s the Difference?
The BostonSight scleral lens platform differs from Blanchard’s in that it offers more options to our practitioners and even more ability to be customized.
The Bostonsight lens portfolio is much more extensive than Onefit. BostonSight scleral lenses that are offered are:
- 16mm
- 16.5mm
- 17mm
- 18.5mm
- 19mm
As an example, My right cornea needed an even larger more customizable lens than Blanchard could offer.
I was fortunate that my practitioner was not only trained and certified for the Blanchard Onefit scleral lens platform but as well on the BostonSight scleral lens platform.
In my case, we opted for the 19mm BostonSight version for my harder-to-fit right cornea.
The BostonSight is noticeably larger than my Onefit lens and insertion is sometimes more difficult.
In light of that fact, the vision is, however, crisp and clear, also there have been no adverse effects to my cornea.
Are the Scleral Lens Comfortable?
Both brands are extremely comfortable. Although this may be true, the comfort of the lens will also depend on our fitter’s expertise, experience, and ability to troubleshoot problems with fitting.
How Many Hours in the Day Can you Wear Scleral Lenses?
I can wear both brands for 10 to 13 hours. At the same time, because I have undergone a cornea transplant, I don’t go over 10 hours of wear.
However, this has nothing to do with a comfort issue, just a personal choice to preserve the health of my cornea transplant.
So, for the purposes of this scleral lens review, 10 to 13 hours is no problem for most and for some, even longer.
Do the Scleral Lens Break Easily?
Do the scleral lens break easily? Both brands in this scleral lenses reviews are extremely durable. Neither of these brands has ever broken or cracked on me, knock on wood.
I was involved in a bike accident a few months ago and face-planted. It was my own fault, riding with no hands, long story. All that to say, neither lens popped out or broke, not so much for my face. Again long story.
Be that as it may, how vigilant we are with the care of our lenses, insertion, taking them out, cleaning, and storage, will determine the longevity of our lenses.
Key Takeaways:
- Blanchard’s Onefit Med scleral lens platform offers two versions. Onefit Med and Onefit Med+
- Onefit Med+ offers larger diameter lenses giving practitioners another option for hard-to-fit corneas
- BostonSights offers even larger diameter lenses than Blanchard for even tougher cases such as mine. Cornea transplants can make fitting difficult.
- Comfort is excellent for both brands. Comfort will also depend on our practitioner’s expertise in the fitting process.
- Can be worn for 10-13 plus hours.
- Both lenses are very durable, however, we have our own role to play in the longevity of our lenses.
To Summarize
Both brands in this scleral lenses reviews are excellent choices however, they would be used for different vision restoration situations.
Blanchard for less severely damaged corneas. The BostonSight for cases like mine with severely compromised corneas. Both are crucial tools in the fight against vision loss, in my case due to keratoconus.
If you or someone you know is experiencing vision problems, I urge you to see a qualified practitioner as soon as possible and get screened for keratoconus. Early detection is key.
