Can vision be restored after keratoconus? The answer is yes. I have been living with keratoconus for three decades. I had my vision restored with the scleral contact lens after being diagnosed with keratoconus. This article will discuss whether vision can be restored after being diagnosed.
We are not speaking of any other treatments for keratoconus. Simply vision restoration.
Our Vision Can Be Restored After Keratoconus
I have keratoconus and I have had my vision restored. The scleral lens has helped me get my life back on track after too many years of blurred vision due to keratoconus.
My vision restoration was only possible with the help of my practitioners. Those of us with keratoconus must keep in contact with our professionals. As mentioned above, they are the only ones that can restore our vision.
No Cure for Keratoconus
We know there is no cure for keratoconus at the present time. For this reason, if our vision is to be restored, we need to create alliances with experts in the field of keratoconus.
As an example, in my case, my alliances include ophthalmologists specializing in keratoconus. Cornea specialists due to my undergoing a cornea transplant for my right eye. And an expert lens fitter to map and fit my eyes for scleral contact lenses.
Vision Can Be Restored After Keratoconus
When wearing my scleral contact lenses my vision is 20/20. There are pros and cons to wearing scleral contact lenses for keratoconus. You and your practitioners will have to weigh those.
However, speaking as someone who has been using scleral contact lenses since 2017. I can say, that the vision restoration has been nothing short of a miracle.
Is Vision Restoration After Keratoconus for Everyone?
There are cases where some of us will be lens intolerant. Some of us will be lens intolerant for only certain types of contacts.
To put it differently, fitting lenses for our cornea will be extremely difficult for some of us with keratoconus. No matter how good our lens fitter is.
Although this may be true, these situations are the exception, not the rule. For example, my first contact lenses were not scleral lenses. I was unable to wear them due to comfort issues.
However, I was able to, and still, do to this day, use scleral contact lenses everyday for my vision restoration.
